HALE KOA KEA

Iconic Architecture

Inspirational Design

At Hale Koa Kea, modernist design meets the serenity of the Kohala Coast, drawing inspiration from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion. A 120-foot sandstone gallery anchors the home, inviting residents to move through spaces defined by light, texture, and precision. This striking architectural element connects the two wings while creating a natural division between private and shared spaces.

Minimalism in Stone and Glass

The palette of stone, glass, and mahogany mirrors the natural tones of the Kohala Coast, grounding the home in its environment. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, while Moroccan-inspired balcony panels and cantilevered eaves add understated texture and artistry to the minimalist aesthetic.

Crafted with Locally Sourced Materials

I wanted the feeling of being in a small luxurious boutique hotel when walking from the east wing to the west,” says the home’s designer.  “The gallery gives you that feeling every time you walk down it.  I also enjoy the privacy from guests that the gallery affords.  I wasn’t reaching for oversized over-furnished rooms but rather an intimate very private place to enjoy Hawaii’s beauty.”
